Timothy Onion @anode.org · Jan 3 I've heard it said about 10% of people find looking at images like the Ultra Deep Field unsettling, leaving them feeling small and adrift. For me, I find the very opposite is true. I look at images like this and see lights on in distant buildings, a city across the crescent of a dark ocean bay.

The universe is no doubt dominated by vast empty space, and though I believe there is life extant around most stars in the universe, intelligent life abides around a minuscule fraction of stars, and technologically capable life around a minuscule fraction of those.
