The joke highlights the addictive nature of collecting these virtual/real cards and the slippery slope toward addiction even with something primarily designed for children. This highlights a more systemic problem in a capitalist-centric video game and content-driven culture where the extracting and exploiting of the most amount of attention or dollars from the mass population is not just encouraged but mandatory for survival. Another layer of the joke for those that see it is that this is already widely known and accepted as a core part of our society that is unchangeable by us (the common citizen), while we still acknowledge the fact that the people of our society that do have the power to change such an exploitative culture are exactly the ones that benefit from the exploitation. Therefore they are incentivised to maintain the status quo and in fact, try to squeeze out as much wealth as possible to benefit themselves without angering the masses into an organized movement.
