Generations of research ideas being conceived right now will be doomed to (pardon the phrase, Mr Vought) abortion. Yes, rampant abortions from sea to shining sea, wherever the hearts of ingenuity and knowledge currently beat. But I believe in the scientific community's right to life, and its right to choose. The rule must not be changed, and funding of research proposals must continue to be decided based on scientific peer review. Really it's for the same reason we trust a surgeon rather than an administrator to decide whether and how to operate: when your life depends on it, you choose the one who can tell an elbow from an asystole (ASSHOLE).
