BRIGHAM NURSES REPORTED FOR THEIR SHIFTS AFTER A 24-HOUR STRIKE. THE HOSPITAL DIDN'T LET THEM IN. At 6:59 a.m. Thursday, hundreds of nurses walked up to the front entrance of Brigham and Women's Hospital. One minute later, their strike, the largest one by nurses in the state's history, ended. Kelly Morgan, a nurse and union leader, walked up to a security guard and said she was reporting for her shift. Union members can return to work Monday, the security guard said, reading off a piece of paper in his hand. "Our strike is over," Morgan said. "We'd like to take care of our patients." The crowd began to roar. "Let us in, the nurses chanted, slowly returning to Francis Street for another day of picketing. The interaction, while dramatic with a crowd of onlookers and news cameras, followed nurses ex-pectations. It marked the end of the roughly 4,000 unionized nurses' one-day strike, the first in the renowned hospital's history, and the beginning of a four-day lockout. That's because Brigham, one of Mass General Brigham's two flagship hospitals, said it had no choice but to hire temporary nurses to maintain patient care, and their contract required at least five days of work. In a statement, MGB said Brigham remains open and fully operational: "Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our patients." As for the lockout, MGB said nurses had long been on notice about the hospital's plans.
