Now I’d be a weapon of justice. Mama, all I see is darkness, but today, I choose to be the light. A smile parted my lips.

I spun around at the faint sound of whimpering. A gasp escaped me. Several rebels laid motionless on the ground. Bullets riddled their bodies. Bile rose in my throat as pools of blood spread beneath them like crimson wings. “We should retreat,” I whispered to Torya. A light breeze swept by and the faint smell of sweat filled my nose. “Why retreat?” a deep voice inquired. Torya and I jumped backward in opposite directions. The staff wielding mage had appeared between us. He slammed his weapon against the ground. Easily six feet tall, he grinned with all teeth, a jagged scar beneath his full bottom lip. Curly golden brown hair brushed against his thick brows. I tightened my grip on my discs. He shot me a quick look and spun around, facing Torya. A moment later, she was flung into the air by a sweeping strike. Her body slammed into the building across the street. She lay like a broken marionette. “Torya!” I leaned back when the stranger stalked toward me. “Get back.” “Don’t get in the way of us restoring harmony to this cursed and broken world,” he replied.

There’d always been a degree of ignorance the Gartaben had. Perhaps it stemmed from the bliss they lived in built on the corpses of my people.

She clasped her hands together. “I’m glad you’re all okay.” I bit back a laugh. The time mage had always lived up to her name since she was young. It was a relief that some things hadn’t changed despite our world falling apart. She draped an arm around my neck and sighed. “I missed you, Lani.” “I missed you, too,” I said, hugging her. She smelled of roses and peppermint oil, a sweet and hypnotizing mix. “What are you doing all the way here?” I asked. She arched a brow. “The battlefront has been quieter. I figured I’d take advantage of this “peace” to visit some of my favorite people.” Leonard pressed a hand against his chest. “That’s so kind of you.” She shot a look at him, a faint but playful grin on her face. “Shut up and feed me, Leo.” He threw his hands up in the air. “Alright, alright. Give me twenty minutes and I’ll whip up something for us.”

Talon glanced down the hallway. “Where’s Falco?” “Missing your twin?” Leonard teased. “Oh, yes. Going too long without my womb mate is just excruciating,” he dryly replied.

Those words…they were filled with hope like Mama’s. I parted my lips to speak, but my tongue was thick and rebellious. I snapped my mouth shut and held myself tighter, knees digging into my chest. Our weapons left silver streaks in the air as we pressed the enemy back. The advantage was ours—or so we believed. Sol dashed forward, stabbing with his twin blades. The Empyrean’s eye glinted as it leapt into the air. It landed on Sol’s outstretched arms and a sharp clap followed as it delivered a spinning kick to his face. He staggered backward, blood dribbling from his mouth. The Hunter dropped to his knee, cradling his jaw. Images of our previous encounters with the automaton flashed in my mind. I tightened my grip on my Verdant twin daggers. The thought of his unconscious form made my stomach turn and my chest swell with anger. Those times, I doubted myself, but today I wouldn’t. I couldn’t. The nanomachines in my veins heated my skin as they flared to life, filling me with renewed energy. I rolled my neck and took an offensive stance. “What are you doing?” Sol said, rising to his feet. “Protecting you like you’ve always protected me,” I said. “I lead, you follow.”
