I have been collecting music that uses the Shepard Tone (an auditory illusion created by cognitive scientist Roger Shepard, which creates the perception that the sound is infinitely rising or falling - in case you're not familiar) with the plan of eventually building a mix around it. After a few years (six!) of sitting on this idea, I finally got round to it and C.E were kind enough to put it on tape. During the process I realised a full mix of just the Shepard Tone might be a bit too much, so I decided to widen the scope a bit to include other forms of rising and falling pitch, hence the final title “Spiralling”. Including 1960s experimental composer Meredith Monk, Nintendo game composer Koji Kondo, minimal legends Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Donnacha Costello, contemporary producers such as Errorsmith, Pearson Sound, Untold and Autechre, through to Nine Inch Nails, YMO, and Stereolab.

Hard to read, like hard to find to read. Comics has an industry built on white guys that does little to no Black cultural preservation unless it’s connected to a franchise. Historically, white publishers made it hard for Black comics to exist in the first place, forcing Black periodicals to build their own networks. Academic collections exist, though you’ll see more pieces of original artwork preserved from private collections than the comics as they were printed, and access is extremely limited. A world without Black comics is eagerly proliferated by an online community in the throes of corporate nostalgia. The comics that are preserved are done in the name of completion- this run, that artist, this publisher- regardless of quality, a breadcrumb trail followed back in time from a starting point of mainstream, contemporary popularity.
