The tension I see from Critical Al/Al Ethics researchers too is from them having seen Al Safety folk get millions of dollars while kinda buddying up with AGI labs. Cold Takes - The "most important century" • The long-run future is radically unfamiliar. Enough advances in technology could lead to a long-lasting, galaxy-wide civilization that could be a radical utopia, dystopia, or anything in between. • The long-run future could come much faster than we think, due to a possible Al-driven productivity explosion. • The relevant kind of AI looks like it will be developed this century - making this century the one that will initiate, and have the opportunity to shape, a future galaxy-wide civilization.
In one night, activists flipped a council to 'no' on a data center. How did they do it? They tracked down the addresses of council members who had been voting 'yes. At 1 am, they visited one house, and then made a ruckus! They hit pots and pans and sang protest songs. They left flyers at neighbours' doorsteps revealing that this man was planning to go against the will of the town. They did this at the homes of two council members, and the next day they flipped their vote. Neither had listened to the residents' resounding pleas at town hall meetings to *not* allow the construction of the data center. This was a military Al data center that would be used to simulate drone attacks. The stakes could not be higher.

LLMs (large language models) have had disastrous consequences for society - and the worst is yet to come, as companies continue to pour ungodly amounts of resources into building an "AI God" to fulfill their bizarre TESCREAL fantasies of creating a techno-utopian civilization full of 10^58 posthumans among the stars.
In response to AgatheL (above), Faggella asks: Do you think that alignment is solvable? Where do you intend to make a difference in alignment? Do you plan to work at an AGI lab or do you plan to work in the government or something else? To which AgatheL rejoins: I do, but I don’t think it’s a technical problem, really . I think it’s a spiritual one, and my current strategy is to support the mental/spiritual health of A(G)I developers. I have done technical research for a few years and realised that’s not the way imo.
