"Mise en Scène pour la Nuit". available as an original ink drawing and as a giclée art print The stage has been set for the night's events. The characters involved have assembled. (Yes, I consider the crescent moon, park bench, topiary hedge, and the lamp post all as players in my 'production'.) What might transpire tonight in this hidden, lonely corner of the old park? Are they waiting for another, as yet unseen participant to join them? You might think it unfair, but I'm leaving it up to your imagination to create the scenario and whatever story may follow. My drawings are collaborations between myself and the viewer. It takes your mind to complete them.

“The Wanderer of Night Land” giclée art print I’ve made countless nighttime sojourns through landscapes of all kinds: through woods, along lakesides, neighborhoods and parklands in search of the effects of moonlight and lamplight on my surroundings. Along the way I’ve encountered many a lone cat exploring its own nocturnal world. I think this cat is perhaps a self portrait - me, investigating the magical night world I love.

“Allée of the Ancients” giclée art print This is a fanciful scene of a small cat looking up at tall, weathered, vine-covered statues of his ancient ancestors in a winding, dark alley of overgrown trees and hedges. It is an atmospheric, mysterious, yet whimsical scene. The idea for this piece came when, on one of my walks, I spied a cat sitting in a garden, looking up an old wooden pedestal at a large, weather-worn ceramic cat perched on top. I had just received my DNA results from Ancestry.com a couple days prior. The two things instantly blended together in my mind. This piece was rendered with dip pen and ink and Paynes Grey watercolour.

He’s shniffing the fragrance in deeply to the tip of his tail! The setting is a small, cosy backyard with the kitchen window swung wide open in the background. This piece is rendered loosely in pen & ink with watercolour.

“3 AM” giclée art print It’s 3 AM in suburbia and someone is still awake. A silhouetted cat sits on a windowsill behind open blinds peering out at a mysterious nighttime world. This is her favourite post in the house. From here she can look out over the expansive lawn and clipped hedges. Her humans have long since gone to bed. There is streetlight shinning on the house, hedges and lawn. She’s hoping to see something - anything - move about in the shadows. She listens intently for any rustle in the leaves, snap of a twig, or scampering over the grass. For now, all is silent except for the faint rush of a passing car. The night belongs to her. I've drawn this in ballpoint pen in a very fine, wispy cross-hatching style trying to achieve that vague, mysterious tonality seen at that hour. I take a lot of walks late at night, and this is a home l've passed several times, complete with the lit window. I always imagine a cat sitting there, and the beauty is that I can make it so. This is a companion piece of sorts with “The Yearning for Adventure”, also available in my Etsy shop.
“New Love in the Old Park” giclée print Two kitties are sitting snuggled up to each other on a bench in an old Victorian park at night. They are clearly in love. Their first meeting was just in passing as they made their nightly rounds in the gardens. As the nights progressed so did their interest in each other. Curiosity led to friendship, friendship led to affection, and love slowly blossomed. They’re now inseparable and make the rounds together. This is their favourite spot, watched over by curious crows.
“A Wary Friendship” giclée print It is nighttime and deep within the grounds of an old mansion. Under the lamplight, in the foreground, sits a cat, seated atop her favourite bench. From there she can survey her realm and listen to the sounds of the night. For several days a small bird has taken an interest in the cat, sneaking unseen a little closer to her each night. The bird had trouble sleeping and was lonesome. One night the bird finally stirs the courage to show himself and the cat is surprised, to say the least. Impressed by the bird’s temerity, and against all instinct, the cat feels an instant fondness for him. Is this the beginning of a beautiful friendship?

Through the surrounding dense foliage lamplight shines upon the cat, casting the cat’s shadow along an ivy covered wall behind the bench. I actually witnessed this scene on one of my many moonlit nighttime sojourns. The cat didn’t like my staring and quickly ran away. It is rendered in black ballpoint pen.

Claire is a bit eccentric; some in the neighborhood even say she’s mad…downright crackers. In actuality, she’s just on a different wavelength, enabling her to request a social visit from the moon. After all, she sits outside and stares at the moon almost every night, meowing softly, as if in conversation. What do they talk about?

Whilst taking a rest it visits with a favourite earthling: a cat. The cat sits at the base of the tree in a pool of moonlight and stares up at his friend.
“The Yearning for Adventure” giclée art print Hark! What was that?! Our feline friend has heard mysterious noises emanating from out in the garden. Were the sounds an ‘it’ or a ‘them’? She thinks she sees shadowy shapes dart across the lawn and slither through the shrubbery. The poor cat is trapped indoors. All she wants is to leap through that window into a moonlit landscape of wild curiosity filled with unknown and unseen excitements - and perhaps an exploit or two of good old mischief.
The title is "Impromptu". It's a playful scene of an eccentric trio of friends; a fuchsia cat playing a flute while dancing upon a red dog. A noisy crow is voicing his opinion. They're all gathered under the light of a lamppost at twilight in an old Victorian European garden setting. It's whimsical with a bit of playful gothic. Rendered in a dip pen & ink cross-hatching technique with watercolour. If I recall correctly, this was inspired by the film “Impromptu". It has nothing to do with the film, but I liked the title. Then it all popped in my head. The rest, as they say, is history.

“Within a Galaxy of Leaves” *available as an original ink drawing and as a giclée art print In a clearing, a noble white cat sits mesmerized by the open volume at her feet. Is it a favourite book revisited or something new? She reads by the generous light of the crescent moon which has kindly lowered itself from the night sky to provide illumination. The scene is framed by swaying grasses in the foreground and a mysterious white column. Behind her is a curtain of flowing, dark swirling leaves forming constellations of churning galaxies a la Van Gogh. Below the leaves, in the background, a shadowy figure lurks. Is all this actually happening or is it the dreamlike imaginings of the cat as she reads her book?

“Fang & Friends” giclée art print Fang, the snaggletoothed tuxedo cat, is at home with a couple loyal, yet untrustworthy friends (or fiends?). The full moon shines through the gothic window. This particular full moon, however, is a giant grinning pumpkin! It's all quite eerie, yet in a sinisterly gleeful way, suitable for year-round viewing. Drawn in black India ink with predominantly blue & orange watercolor washes. Since a child, l've loved to draw cats with one protruding tooth, I love tuxedo cats, I love to carve pumpkins, and I love curly-cue lines. And my favourite colour is orange. So there you have it.

Our cat friend has been enjoying a solitary, undisturbed meander amongst the trees, savoring the sights, sounds, and smells, when a rather bold leaf has the temerity to land on and stick to the middle of his face. Such undignified effrontery! He is clearly quite consternated. A rather bemused little bird looks on from a safe distance in the branches above. Rendered in black ballpoint pen & coloured pencil on toned paper. The leaf is the only thing in the drawing that’s in colour.

“Pavane” This piece was inspired by Gabriel Fauré’s “Pavane”. I tried to capture some of the slow, stately, quiet, and haunting aspects of the music in visual form. It pictures a graceful stand of trees on a peninsula jutting out into a lake. A sunset glows behind the trees and onto the water. The trees cast reflections in the gently flowing water. A long procession of birds flys across the sky in the background. As with most of my work, I don’t use references, but draw from imagination. Rendered in black ballpoint pen.

They both face each other across the divide. Is the cat hunting or simply curious about the feathered creature? The bird is unafraid and stands its ground. What will happen next? “Night Light” There’s nothing like curling up with a good book in the evening, especially when you have a friendly crescent moon over your shoulders to provide ample reading light. The moon is comfortably nestled in the tree; taking a rest from its nighttime journey whilst the cat is settled on a nice curved branch with a soft tuft of leaves as a cushion.
