"The Unfit for Work" depicts the fate of deportees who couldn't perform the tasks ordered by SS officers in extermination camps during World War II. Some were sent to the left, others to the right. It was that simple. This chilling painting is set in the Auschwitz extermination camp in Poland. In the foreground, we see a family of six, including a baby, who have just arrived by train. Every day, thousands of people like this family, exhausted and ash-skinned, arrived at the camp. If they couldn't work, they were led directly to the gas chambers. Above the family, a transparent specter hovers, precisely evoking the thousands of bodies that were cremated daily, emerging as smoke from the chimneys of that hell. On the left side, we see the arm of an SS officer holding a weapon, and in the background, hundreds of people work in that factory of death, loading the corpses of their own people amidst barbed wire and chimneys that continuously burned bodies every day for years. The Survivor Artist David Olère experienced all of this firsthand. Thanks to his artistic skills, he survived as a Sonderkommando, witnessing all the atrocities that occurred in that place. When the camp was liberated, Olère was one of the few artists who could testify about the Holocaust, helping to prove everything that happened. The painter was one of the few living human beings to see the gas chambers (which he was responsible for emptying every day) and the crematoria ovens (which he filled with the corpses of these people). He painted these atrocities both as a catharsis and to document the horror. The artist would create thousands of other drawings and paintings about daily life in the camp, but "The Unfit for Work" illustrates what the atmosphere might have been like upon arriving at that place. In fact, all films about the Holocaust drew from Olère's art to depict the evil of which we are capable.
