Dear Harriet Tubman and Ockley Green communities, We want to inform you about a situation that occurred at our annual middle school dance showcase yesterday evening. The showcase took place at Jefferson High School. During the performance, a small group of individuals were involved in a vocal altercation outside the building. Staff and campus safety personnel immediately stepped in and worked to deescalate the situation. When the individuals exchanged threats of violence, staff called 911. Officers from Portland Police Bureau responded, and the individuals taking part in the incident immediately left. Out of an abundance of caution, we canceled the rest of the showcase. We know that hearing about incidents like this can raise concerns. Please know that we remain deeply committed to student and staff safety and security, which is why we acted quickly to respond to the incident. What Happened: Given the chaotic nature of the incident and the fact that we had to shut down the showcase abruptly, rumors have been spreading that ICE agents were on scene. This is absolutely not true. Federal agents were never involved. Actions Taken: The incident instigators have been trespassed from all PPS schools. This means that they are permanently banned from all PPS property. If they are ever seen on district property, we will immediately call PPB, who will follow all law enforcement protocols to ensure that they do not return. This kind of behavior is simply not tolerated in our schools. Next Steps/Preventative Measures: We understand that situations like this can cause anxiety and concern. If your student would like to talk to a trusted adult about this incident, please reach out to a member of our student support team.
