wsj.com OpenAI Misses Key Revenue, User Targets in High-Stakes Sprint Toward IPO Berber Jin 6–7 minutes April 27, 2026 9:00 pm ET OpenAI recently missed its own targets for new users and revenue, stumbles that have raised concern among some company leaders about whether it will be able to support its massive spending on data centers. Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar has told other company leaders that she is worried the company might not be able to pay for future computing contracts if revenue doesn’t grow fast enough, according to people familiar with the matter. Board directors have also more closely examined the company’s data-center deals in recent months and questioned Chief Executive Sam Altman’s efforts to secure even more computing power despite the business slowdown, the people said. The spending scrutiny is constraining Altman’s once-boundless ambitions ahead of a potential initial public offering that could take place by the end of the year. Friar and other executives are now seeking to control costs and instill more discipline in the business, at times putting them at odds with their CEO, people familiar with the issue said. “We are totally aligned on buying as much compute as we can and working hard on it together every day,” Altman and Friar said in a joint statement. Any suggestion that the pair are divided or pulling back on securing new computing resources is “ridiculous,” they said. For years, Altman has sought to lock up as much data-center capacity as possible, arguing that computing shortages were the biggest constraint to OpenAI’s growth. He went on a dealmaking spree last year that put OpenAI on the hook for some $600 billion in future spending commitments, and tied much of the tech sector’s success to OpenAI’s.

Screenshot of social media post from @fjzeit that reads: my entire career strategy hangs on a strong belief that we are not going to see fully automated software generation in my lifetime. but we are going to see an end to the ralph-loop, spec-driven-one-shot-dream, and the "end of white collar work" hype. we're already seeing some high profile players in software development start to set their coarse along the same path i've been following these past few years. it starts with "wow" then "i can use my skills to fully automate this" and then it proceeds to "fast but no cognitive ownership" then disappointment, confusion, frustration, and ends with "hey, this isn't going to work guys, we need to be more disciplined and look at the code, keep our cognitive ownership, and just use the tools to improve our outcomes. these are not our replacement, these are our accelerators. it's the same story, different tooling". i'm already there. if a company were to come to me today and say "we tried all the trendy stuff but it just made everything worse, we're losing control of our code base, we need to either ditch these things or make them a power-up" then i am ready for that. if i am wrong, then so be it. my career is over anyway because i have zero interest in giving up cognitive ownership and responsibility (the ability to respond), while remaining accountable. i'd rather wash dishes or stack shelves than submit myself to the horrors of remaining accountable without cognitive ownership, agency, and responsibility.
