Screenshot: How to change your behavior The following is a non-exhaustive list of examples: If you smell smoke or see ash on the ground or in the air, put on an N95 mask or better. “Your eyes and nose are the best detectors.” If you see ash on the ground, treat it like toxic waste. Avoid it, or put on full protective gear to clean it up. (You can purchase cheap disposable Tyvek suits online.) Do not put the ash back into the air with leaf blowers. There are very specific cleaning guides you should follow. Put the captured ash into bags, seal the bags, and dispose them. Only use vacuums with HEPA filters. Avoid tracking ash into houses or cars. Take off your shoes and/or wipe them down with baby wipes when entering interior spaces. HVAC systems and air purifiers must use HEPA filters and the filters should be changed much more regularly right now, at least once a month. Change your car air filters to carbon activated air filters. If you have any cloth that smells like smoke, throw it out because many of these chemicals cannot be washed out and can be absorbed through your skin. During the first few rains, stay away from storm drains, running water, and beaches. They will almost certainly be moving toxic ash. Wipe off your pets’ paws when they come in from outside. Do not send children to schools that don’t have upgraded HVAC systems. (At least MERV 13 filters or higher). Make sure the school replaces these filters regularly. Do not send children to schools near burn sites.
The ash from the fires is toxic to breathe and to touch. It contains lead, arsenic, asbestos, and other dangerous chemicals that can have serious long-term health complications, including death. The motivation of this seminar was to help people avoid “the disaster after the disaster,” aka the public health crisis that can occur after a natural disaster when society rushes to return to normalcy. People really want concrete answers right now, but the Coalition emphasized that this is a pretty unprecedented situation, so it’s hard to give exact guidelines about distances affected and timelines for resolution.
