Segal criticises ABC Gaza coverage as being ‘more negative than positive about Israel’ Jillian Segal has said the ABC is adding to the conflation of Jewish identity with the state of Israel by “putting stories on the record that are more negative than positive about Israel, and not covering the other side”.
Best-selling author Trent Dalton, who was scheduled to deliver a keynote at Adelaide Town Hall – one of the few writers’ week events that charges an entry fee – also withdrew. The status of Dalton’s scheduled interviewer, ABC journalist Julia Baird, was unknown, along with almost a dozen other high-profile ABC employees. ABC radio presenters David Marr and Jonathan Green had confirmed their withdrawal.
Upon his release, Radee attempted to call his wife, only to find her phone out of service. He then learned that his wife and all but one of his children had been killed in Gaza during his detention. “I was very happy to be released because the date coincided with my youngest daughter Saba’s third birthday on 13 October. I had planned to make her the best gift to make up for her first birthday, which we could not celebrate because the war had started,” Radee said. “I tried to find some joy in being released on this day, but sadly, Saba went with my family, and my joy went with her,” he said.

Which brings me to another point. There are a lot of commentators who speak about the difference between Peter Dutton camera and Peter Dutton away from the cameras and how he’s actually a very ‘good sort’. But it doesn’t matter. It truly does not matter if Dutton is a good sort in person. It matters what he does with power. How he treats it. What he signals with it. And Dutton, despite from all accounts being much more jovial on the campaign with journalists than Anthony Albanese (who is always cranky, on or off the cameras – he’s a cranky person in general) when he has power, uses it in way to try and hold others down. That’s not ‘a cheeky exchange’. That’s dictatorship.
The more explicit statement of these immediate interests that England has to defend comes from Lord Melchett in a letter to the Daily Telegraph, of London, June 14, 1936: “The advantages of the [Jewish National Home] to the British Empire are obvious. The points at issue are no less than the defense of the Suez Canal, of air stations essential to Imperial communications, and the outlet of the oil pipe line in Haifa; and the harbour at Haifa (and later the harbour which is necessary at Tel-Aviv) have become vital to our naval strategy in the Mediterranean. The security of this complex of Imperial interests can be better assured by a large European population than by the few battalions that can be spared.”
