I will take care of the people as I always have, to include your Soraya. She will remain until a new home is found for her. Sahira: Father—why. I don’t understand. I could lead them— Basir: You have taken away the only thing I have ever truly loved in this world, Sahira, and you expect me to bless you for it? Turning away. Never.
But I turned back. I stared at Askan—at this mountain of a man who only wanted to know my name for some odd reason. I felt the answer rising. It churned in my stomach, burned in my chest. I knew I should remain quiet. I should keep my head down. But— “Sahira,” I whispered, just as the wind picked up. Askan’s chest rose, a deep breath expanding through his frame like it was the first time he had ever truly breathed. Nyros turned his gaze to me then. His lashes fluttered in the breeze, a quiet smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. One hand rose to Askan’s shoulder. He squeezed. And Askan stared at me. Stared, even as I turned and followed my father. And he smiled.
I’m going to miss them. They’re more my family than the people I share this house with: my mother in her room, sweating through possession and my father so blinded by rage and hurt, he can’t see the forest for the trees. Emyl and Caius are leaving and they’re taking a little bit of my heart with them. We—I—have been moving since the first frost, always moving toward something. Answers and questions and revelations in equal parts. First with Eirik, then with them. This year has been exhausting and summer is still weeks away. And now I’m here—home—and I’m afraid because I’ve only known movement. I’ve only understood how to keep going, to not look back, to not hesitate and now there is…silence. There’s stillness. And I don’t know what to do with that. How do I wake up from the nightmares and not immediately roll over, look for Emyl and curl up against him in an effort to return to sleep when he won’t be there? How do I not join Caius outside the tent, quiet except for the crackle of fire and the sound of our breathing, sleep a distant fevered fantasy for us? I fear that these two became more of a home than actual wood and stone, than memories of birthday parties and festivals. And my home is leaving and I’m staying here.
“What?” Vera murmured with a smirk, her voice still rough with sleep. “You’re doing it again,” her companion replied with a warm chuckle. She scooted closer and pressed a plush kiss to Vera’s lips, groaning softly as she deepened it. “Giggling in your sleep.” A cherry red blush spilled across Vera’s high cheekbones as she rolled her eyes. “I don’t giggle.” “One day,” the green-eyed elf woman teased, sitting up and stretching lazily, “I’ll record it and play it for the congregation. Then everyone will know.”
“Priestess,” he sighed, relief bleeding through the word. He dropped to his knees, metal striking marble, as the others followed suit. Ten in total, each bearing his crest, each whispering my title like a prayer. I turned to the guild master, brow raised in question. “We come to make sacrament,” he said. “Beneath the full moon. Before the battle reaches our gates.” “All of you?” My voice wavered slightly. Ten men. All warriors. All watching me. Hungry. He shook his head. “These are my men. The others do not—are not worthy of it.” I nodded, burying the pain of what he wasn’t saying. The others didn’t trust my magic. The gift was sacred and ancient. It was contained in my flesh and, as raw magic, would be passed from my body and into theirs. It would strengthen them, make them that much harder to kill—if they could bear it, if they could endure me. Still, even as I took them all in, it was his gaze I felt the strongest. Burning and familiar. We had never spoken of the last time, nor the time before that—the moon only a crescent in the sky and then missing entirely. And yet, he laid me upon the— “I will prepare the altar,” I said quietly, the power already rising in my blood.
“Aurelia, what have you done?” He slams the folder closed and snarls at her, his eyes darkening with barely leashed rage. “You insolent—I can just make a new paper and pen copy!” “If you think you getting a new paper and pen copy and then getting him to sign it,” Aurelia begins while gesturing to Tavrek, who growls when Frank’s gaze connects with his, “is actually going to work, you’re more delucisonal than Jackie is about becoming the next Missus Tramon.” Frank pales, considerably. “It’s not hard to see, Frank, especially when you know what to look for,” Aurelia scoffs while crossing her arms over her chest. “It’s lonely out here in space for some folks. I get it. You wanted some company. Real curious how things are gonna progress with the real missus here now…”
