A full graphic novel page of my original character Capt. Wren and Bee Buddy, two pirates with a hearts of gold. The 5 panels comic page shows Capt Wren sighing longing at a picture of his folks. Bee Buddy on the poop deck fishes out a message in a bottle which he hurriedly brings to Capt. Wren. The message tells them to find the Heart Treasure to lead them to find Capt Wren’s folks. And in the last panel they sail away to begin their journey and adventure on the high seas. About the Illustrator: Hello 👋 I’m A-Chau Caban, from California, USA. I’m an illustrator and autodidactic artist on my second career journey from IT to book illustration for graphic novels and picture books. I love illustrating animals and animal characters with relatable personalities because they seem to teach us more about being humane and about humanity. I find we receive these messages with a more open heart through these characters. And, I enjoy expressing a range of relatable emotions for my animal and children characters through their characteristics, their movement and actions, and their settings. My goal is for all these elements together to peak the curiosity and excitement of the reader and “draw”them in along with the characters through their story. Meet Apple-Chau introducing her friends, Banana-Bobby (the skater), Kiwi-Karl (the bookworm), and Dragonfruit-Fran (the fashionista).
Illustrated journal entries for week of March
This is a personal project that is inspired by my love of Pokémon, superhero genre, and animals. All these mixed together became the Animal Avengers series. A act of love for my love of nature. The project is intended to help build awareness and support for wildlife conservation. These are the first set of trading card style super hero animal characters. For example, the Axolot-borg is a playful way to highlight the animals’ natural superpower of regenerating its body parts. Its also highlights as an “ultra rare” species that is endangered. It’s one example in the series to educate how amazing wildlife is on our planet and that they have natural super powers. The other cards include cat, cheetah, otter, octopus, guinea pig, squirrel. My hope is to collaborate with animal conservation institutions like the San Diego Zoo to provide their expertise to better educate us all about the animal kingdom. My plan is to create new animal characters and add new decks to the series. This project is creatively an illustration exercise in character design that can also be applied to book covers and the picture book and graphic novel genres.

It’s an octopus sailor character that has changed it shape to look like an anchor showing one of its natural animal superpowers to shape-shift. Image has 4 panel cartoons from my 2025 illustrated journal - one for each week of February. Each panel illustrators a week in my life. These reflect my personal journaling including what I did in a week like grocery shopping, going to the post office or working on an illustration project t. Another week is more figurative representation of my week like “getting back on track” after a family loss with building my illustration career including participating in Bluesky hashtags. Another week reflects literal stormy weather in my area but also stormy emotional things that I was facing like my mom’s uncertain future, my persistent coughing and the chaotic state of my country. The next cartoon is a reflection of how overthinking with all these stressors felt crushing so it’s a cartoon me being crushed by cartoon speech bubbles. And lastly a very personal moment in my life when sometimes you must close doors to find peace and health.

DECEMBER illustrations are: 1st week-the man sitting on a stoop that I met on the street who gave me a flower when I bought him breakfast; 2nd week myself from behind using incense in front of the giant gold Buddha at the temple at the memorial ceremony for my Dad; 3rd week-about our trip to Universals and La Jolla in San Diego to getaway for the holidays including our favorite rides, park shows and the nature we encountered; 4th week-cozy moments at home around Christmas Day including going to out local lodge, enjoying our fireplace and making breakfast of cinnamon buns and pancakes. JANUARY illustrations are: 1st week-I’m calling the hospital where my Dad passed after 3 months to nominate the nurses that helped us for an award and it was very emotional to relive; 2nd week- showing my to-do list and checking what I got done but much more left undone because I’m not focused in my grief but ending the week with a hike at our fave park which helped being in nature; 3rd week- shows the illustrations I’ve been working on for lunar new year with a snake design and the start of my 1st art series idea of the year called Animal Avengers logo; 4th week- a humorous take on a sick week with an allergy attack and other health “bumps in the road”. I have a giant nose exploding in a sneeze and a road with little illustrations of other symptoms I was dealing with along the road

Illustrated art postcard for #kidlitartpostcard day. It has a cute little field mouse named Fin on an adventure. It shows illustrated spots of Fin on a leaf boat going down the stream carrying a lily flower. In the second spot illustration, Fin who covers his head with his flower, just barely escapes a swooping hawk who only caught a bit of his Lilly flower that saved him. Fin is on his way home to bring a lily flower back to his sweet Fran waiting at home. It’s her favorite flower. The things we’ll do for love -the power of love 💕

A short video of my lunar new year illustration for the year of the snake. It had the lettering of Happy 2025 New Year and bright, classic asian colors of an ombré yellow and red. Plus muted pink as highlights and greenish blue as background color. The illustration has two cute snakes - one winding through the happy text and the other curled up between the word new and year. Both in red and yellow colors. And two simple Asian design flowers on both sides and an Asian paper lantern on the left with the Vietnamese word Tet for New Year. The video has the design featured on a few shop products including pouch, postcard, tote bag and sticker.

A little, cute and chubby wren bird dressed as a pirate captain character with his first mate, Bee Buddy, also a pirate bee. It’s a comic strip starting with the two sailing on the blackbird ship. While on the voyage they play sword fight a bag of flour, on their search on desert land they confusedly look at their treasure map searching for the X that makes the spot. But in the end they are found lounging under a palm tree with their loot of treasure including seeds and honey. It’s an illustration digital postcard to provide contact info to agents and art directors in children’s literature.
