Capital Football chief executive Samantha Farrow revealed the Australian Professional Leagues, which runs the A-Leagues, have selected a preferred partner - but she wasn't expecting an official announcement before the end of next week.

Tony Burke has revealed one of the two women from the Iranian soccer team who sought asylum and was offered a humanitarian visa in Australia yesterday has decided to return to Iran. The home affairs minister says the woman contacted the Iranian embassy in Australia so she could get collected, which resulted in the previously undisclosed location of the woman being revealed. Burke says the women who chose to remain in Australia were moved "immediately". "My officials made sure that this was her decision and every question you would want asked was asked," Burke says. "Every member of this delegation they have been shown a respect by Australia that would be unfamiliar to them. "I think we can all be very proud of the Australian Federal Police, of my home affairs officials, of everybody who's been involved in this, to make sure that Australia is a country where they can see there is freedom of choice for women as well," he says.

FIFPRO ASIA / OCEANIA STATEMENT FIFPRO Asia/Oceania calls on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and FIFA to undertake all necessary steps to ensure the safety of Iran's Women's National Team players. Since the team arrived in Australia, the security situation in Iran has deteriorated sharply following the commencement of US and Israeli strikes on 28 February 2026 and Iran's subsequent retaliation. Media are reporting that more than 1,000 civilians have been killed. In addition to the dangerous situation the players would face if they return to Iran following the tournament, FIFPRO Asia/0ceania is deeply concerned by reports that Iranian state television has publicly attacked the members of the team for remaining silent during the national anthem before their opening match. Footage circulating online shows Mohammad Reza Shahbazi, a state TV presenter, branding the players "wartime traitors" and calling for them to face the "stigma of dishonour and betrayal" These statements significantly heighten concerns for the players' safety should they return to Iran after the tournament. FIFPRO Asia/Oceania has once again written to the AFC and FIFA calling on them to uphold their human rights obligations under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and FIFA's Human Rights Policy and protect the players. We call on the AFC and FIFA to urgently engage with the Iranian Football Association, the Australian Government and all other relevant authorities to ensure that every effort is made to protect the safety of the players.
