The fluent modelling of the clothing seems to add movement to the sculpture. According to Rodin, the model, the left-wing politician and publisher Henri Rochefort (1830-1913), was unable to sit still for even a moment. The bust was enlarged and exhibited in 1897. Rodin saw enlarging as part of the creative process. The altered size creates a new relationship between the work and its spectators. This bust was bought by the art collector Thorsten Laurin in 1905.

The Prodigal Son
According to Greek mythology, the Danaïds were banished to the underworld and the eternal task of filling a leaky vessel with water. The female figure is crouched in a pose that expresses despair in the face of this hopeless chore. The Danaïd was originally designated to be part of The Gates of Hell. The work was enlarged and cut in marble for the buyer Herman Frithiof Antell. Encouraged by the success, Rodin had further copies made in marble, bronze and other materials.

Balzac Nude with his Arms Crossed
In his portraits, Rodin sought to capture the model’s inner qualities. The bare, unadorned shape puts focus on the facial expressions. The writer Victor Hugo (1802–1885) refused to model for him, but Rodin was permitted to portray him when he was speaking or eating with friends. The bust was favourably received, especially after Hugo’s death. A large number of copies were made in different materials. This portrait later served as a starting point for the Hugo monument intended for the Panthéon in Paris.
