“Oh, you’re alive,” a melodic, resonant voice says. “I mean. Awake.” “Are you the type of person to loot corpses, then?” Seokjin snipes back, once he has finally gathered more of his wits. “Hmm, well. Technically I’m not a person in the first place.” Seokjin can’t help but notice that this handily avoids answering the question. However, this is not his most important observation of the moment. As his eyes adjust to the murky light, vision clearing, Seokjin takes in the iridescent scales that sparkle at intervals along the stranger’s skin, growing more numerous the closer they get to the waist, where Seokjin finds a thick, aquatic tail that ends in delicate trailing fins where the legs should be.

"...Oh my god," Seokjin finally gasps, head tilted back and overcome. "No, the name is Jungkook." Seokjin flails at him blindly, making only glancing contact as Jungkook dodges his slapping hands through cackled laughter. When he opens his eyes again, Seokjin is startled to find Jungkook's face just a few centimeters away from his own, his hands bracketing Seokjin's legs on the couch. "Hyung, it was good?" The way that Jungkook says it sounds more like a statement of fact rather than true insecurity. Seokjin rolls his eyes, but the self-satisfied grin he gets in return proves that he is probably just as transparent.

Give me a fanfiction trope and I'll grade it: • A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it. • B: Like it. Not one of my bigger cravings, but it can scratch a certain itch if I'm in the right mood. • C: Neutral. A good author might be able to sell it, but a bad one will kill it deader than dead. • D: Not my favorite. I avoid it if I can, but it won't necessarily put me off reading something. • F: Hate it. Will immediately make me nope out of a fic.
As they round a corner, the door just ahead of them flings open unexpectedly. “Fuck,” the culprit curses, a large hand with knobby fingertips curled around the door’s thick metal edge. He runs his free hand through a shock of dark, fluffy hair and takes off a pair of rimless glasses, rubbing one of the lenses on his shirt and grimacing when he realizes that the grease stains there are just making things worse. His eyes snap up when he realizes that he has an audience. “Shit. Who is this?” One of those long, pale fingers points at Jungkook, wagging at him loosely. “I’m Jungkook,” he says, for some reason. The man snorts. “Right, okay. *Very* illuminating.” He peers around Jungkook like he is invisible, looking past him with a thick, arched brow. “Jimin, the fuel intake’s busted. Again. Do you have a minute, or are we giving luxury tours of the ship now?”

“Oh,” Namjoon says, breath catching in his throat. Whatever he had been expecting to see, it wasn’t this: a seemingly endless pilgrimage of ARMYs across the bridge between the venue and the hotels of the Vegas strip, lightsticks bouncing here and there among them like scattered stars. They pack the closed-off street from sidewalk to sidewalk, moving like one body – he can’t see individual faces from here, but he can imagine it, their shared exhaustion and joy. A pang of something like loneliness strikes out of nowhere, a sharp feeling of fondness for an experience that Namjoon can by necessity never participate in, despite being part of the reason that it’s happening at all. Lyrics are swirling again just beneath his skin, and he itches to write them down somewhere. He’ll keep them under his tongue for now, curling like smoke.

This time, Jungkook makes no move to grab the remote and search up a video. He pulls his legs up on the couch and turns toward Seokjin, clutching his beer like a lifeline. “Hyung,” he says. “Have you done it yet? With a guy?” Grateful that he had already finished his last sip, Seokjin still wheezes a little on his next breath as it is. “What kind of question–” he starts, then abruptly realizes that this is not outside of the realm of the kind of thing that he and Jungkook usually talk about after a couple of drinks. It’s just that normally it has been about women, which had felt… safer. Huh. He takes another sip of beer, buying himself some time. “No,” he finally says, firm and quiet. “Not yet.” Jungkook nods as if this is about what he expected, which Seokjin thinks he should maybe feel a little offended by.
