Screenshot reading: Why Minnesota? Prior to the establishment of Minnesota Territory in 1849, several hundred Norwegians lived around present-day southern Wisconsin and northeastern Iowa. After landing in New York, many took steamers through the Great Lakes to the swampy village of Chicago. By 1860, many of those who had stayed to see the city explode from a few dozen shacks in 1840 to a population of more than 100,000 were dismayed at the difficulty of maintaining their native culture and religion. Among a sea of different ethnic groups, they feared their children would lose their Norwegian identity. Some wrote negative letters home to tell the next wave of immigrants that their way of life was best pursued on farms further West.

Jillaine Mertens, who ran three day care centers in Minnesota, including Creative Stars Academy in Rochester, Creative Stars in Kasson, and Tree of Life in Ramsey, is charged with wire fraud. An open letter from rent relief organizers on Pause Evictions, Save Lives. Since December 4, 2025, we have joined our beloved community in the work of responding to a brutal, violent, federal occupation that resulted in the abduction and disappearance of our neighbors. Those of us writing this letter have developed a community around another role we share: organizing rent funds to keep our neighbors safe in the homes they have been sheltering in. Since January 2026, we have collectively raised and dispersed almost $10 million in rental assistance to keep our neighbors safe from eviction under occupation. Minneapolis Council Members Rainville, Vetaw, Warren, Shaffer, Palmisano, and Whiting: We write to ask you to choose to stand with us to “Pause Evictions, Save Lives” and vote, on March 26, to override Mayor Frey’s veto.
