It was an odd post for many reasons, and as fans online have pointed out, the policies that the Trump administration has pursued and the ideas that it has expressed in numerous ways, would mean that in their ideal world, these three Black players in the graphic wouldn't be playing for the national team in the first place, let alone being integral parts of it. There are a few naturalized citizens, and the administration has come out against that right. Balogun is a citizen because his pregnant mother was denied the opportunity to fly back to England and had to give birth to him in New York City, and the Trump administration has made it their mission to get rid of birthright citizenship. Dest was born in Almere in Flevoland, Netherlands, and is the son of a Surinamese-American father. He's hardly the kind of player that can be spoken of when talking about one "homeland". And Chris Richards is an African-American born in Alabama, who was recently on video for the USMNT talking about the importance of remembering and celebrating Juneteenth, a day that still remains a federal holiday since only Congress can change that, which hasn't stopped the president from trying to reduce its recognition and visibility. Not to mention the overall negative attitude that those in his administration have had for Black people in general, from policies to his personal views.

Though I was farming along at a decent clip, I cannot resist the gamer’s grotesque urge to ruin a nice bike ride by minmaxing. Farm for a long enough time and you will quickly realize that the longest part of any farming ride is the walk back to the previous station. If your goal is to maximize the number of points you collect, then reducing that return trip is the most efficient way to increase your points per hour. There are several ways to do this. You can run really, really fast, although this will tire you out very quickly. Alternatively, you can carry a return vehicle with you. Objectively the easiest one to carry with you is going to be a skateboard or electric longboard; it can snap on to the basket of a bike or fit easily into a backpack. Unfortunately, I have always sucked at skating and every attempt has ended with me eating pavement. The other option, which I should stress is extremely inadvisable, is an electric folding scooter. I found a guy selling an extremely busted Ninebot ES2 on Facebook Marketplace for next to nothing, took it apart and got it working with some solder shrink and a replacement part. I then found the cheapest shoulder sling I could find on AliExpress, allowing me to carry it over my shoulder like a guitar. The workflow was fairly simple: find a cluster, scoot to it, collapse the scooter, ride, uncollapse scooter, ride to the previous dock, rinse and repeat. Because the trips are more frequent, I could fit more in before the point values recalibrated. And when the farming cluster finally did dry up, I would simply ride home.

I prefer to use my own damn eyes and ears, and they tell me that video games are not a better place thanks to The Game Awards. Careers are not made, prestige is not accrued, horizons are not broadened. I do not fault developers for grasping at any handhold available to them in this rapidly decaying business beset by lecherous consolidation and ravenous profit-seeking, and hope that more than a handful have been able to stay in the business longer thanks to the show’s exposure. But I think The Game Awards stance on the industry is exceedingly clear: Things are fine just the way they are. Everyone knows this isn’t true, but we are feeble in our articulations, rote in our responses to cruelties we protest. It is perturbing that we’ve become accustomed to the Hellscape Preamble, a boilerplate paragraph where socially conscious writers will acknowledge layoffs, industry turmoil, and global conflict, before running down their list of best games of the year. We make for ourselves the world we write, and we can only write the world we imagine. I’m begging you to consider how small our imaginations have gotten, that we will turn away from the capaciousness of our hearts and minds when it comes to video games in the name of a good time. Tune into The Game Awards or not, but consider the kind of person it is made for, and if that aligns with the world you want to lie in.
