Text: “Burn-out is just the beginning,” he says, voice low. “The next stage is overheating.” The way he says it sends a chill through me. “So why stop short? Why not make me experience that?” “Because overheating means you’re burning through your life force to keep casting magic,” he looks straight at me, “and that’s not something you come back from unharmed, if at all.”
Text: Prologue “Please don’t go there!” I plead. “If you do, you will die.” The two travellers ignore me. I step closer as they break camp, as if approaching will make them listen. “You don’t understand what’s out there—”One of them shivers slightly before going back to tightening a saddle strap. The other doesn’t even look at me. “I’m begging you,” I say, quieter now. “Turn back before it’s too late…” They mount up and ride away. I stand there, long after their silhouettes have vanished beyond the horizon. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. It will take them a few days to get to that forsaken place. I can only pray they change their minds before they make it there. Four days later, I allow my consciousness to drift, soaring across the barren land under the pale moonlight, searching. Dread pools in my stomach the closer I get. I hear it. Screams. Accompanied by the inhuman guttural howling which has become all too familiar. The sounds of bones cracking and flesh being ripped apart fills my ears. I pull my consciousness back with a jerk. I failed. Again.
