I wouldn’t want to have skin the color of shit.” “What a thing to say,” said Elphaba. “If you ask me, that’s a shitty opinion.” “Oh please,” said Boq. “Let’s just shut up.” “I forgot, Elphie, skin is your issue too,” said Avaric. “Leave me out of this,” she said. “We just had lunch, and you give me dyspepsia, Avaric. You and the beans we had at lunch.”
“Is it worth it?” he asks, looking across at Gabbie. “Cause it’s not feeling worth it to me yet.” “You haven’t even done it yet,” Gabbie laughs. She grabs a pillow out from under her and tosses it at him. Marcus has to straighten up to catch it and avoid getting smacked right in the face. “Of course it’s worth it. Yeah, this part of it sucks, but I got to do what I wanted to do. What I was really passionate about, what I loved doing. And I’ll get to do it again, someday. Or maybe I’ll find something else I love doing in the interim. Whatever, you know? Of course it’s worth it.”

Eli has to tilt his head back to look Marcus in the face. This fact works a shiver up his spine. Marcus’s chin tilts down, dark eyes flickering warmly over his face. Above them, the AC kicks on, filling the space around them with a whirring white noise.  “Sorry,” Eli says, face going hot. “I don’t really—” “Look,” Marcus interrupts, gentler this time. His other hand touches the edge of Eli’s jaw. The brush of his knuckles leave a hot streak against Eli’s skin. “I’m going to kiss you now. Is that— okay? Is that cool?”
