Some autistic people find making phone calls extremely stressful and unpleasant and will avoid them at all costs. Please don’t try and force your communication preferences on others. image: anon #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD

I've never been able to explain this to people! I just don't know how to describe why it's so stressful. I thought I was alone in this!

I've been trying to force myself to make a call to get a video appointment with my psychiatrist since late August for my bipolar 2 and mild autism. It's so difficult and I don't want to ask my wife to arrange the video appointment. It's nearly impossible making calls for family birthdays.

genuine question: is it in any way defensible to say that building a resistance to discomfort and to stressful things (the "do it scared but do it" mentality) has a place in this conversation?

I’m not autistic, but that’s me 🙂

Omg, I deal with this all the time at work. Everything has to be “let’s hop on a call” -an hour long of me listening to verbal chaos before they get to the point- which could have been a quick email and I could have proceeded with my work. I’ve tried to push back but it’s NT way or the highway.
