Tropical Cyclone Koji has developed, and is moving towards the northeast Queensland coast. Area affected Warning zone Innisfail to Mackay, including Townsville, Palm Island, Bowen, Proserpine and Whitsunday Islands. At 4:00 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time Intensity category 2, sustained winds near the centre of 95 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 130 kilometres per hour Location within 45 kilometres of 17.1 degrees South, 148.1 degrees East, 275 kilometres north northeast of Townsville and 225 kilometres east northeast of Innisfail Movement south at 13 kilometres per hour Tropical Cyclone Koji (12U) is located in the Coral Sea offshore of the North Tropical Coast and is moving south towards the Queensland coast. Koji, a category 2 system, is forecast to continue on a similar south track until crossing the coast. The coastal crossing is forecast for early Sunday morning between Townsville and Bowen. After crossing, Koji will weaken and then track generally Hazards DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS to 130 km/h are possible from this evening and into early Sunday morning about exposed coastal locations from south of Townsville to Proserpine. GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 100 km/h are expected to develop over coastal areas between Cardwell and Airlie Beach, this afternoon or evening. GALES may extend north, to areas between Innisfail and Cardwell this evening if Koji takes a track further west. GALES may extend south, to areas between Proserpine and Mackay, and adjacent inland areas overnight and early Sunday morning. Gales are expected to ease as the system crosses the coast and moves inland during Sunday. HEAVY RAINFALL, which may lead to FLASH FLOODING, is forecast to develop from Ingham to Proserpine tonight. Locally INTENSE RAINFALL, which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING, is possible between Townsville and Proserpine later tonight, extending south to Mackay on Sunday.

Details of Tropical Low 12U at 4:00 am AEST: Intensity: Tropical Low, sustained winds near the centre of 65 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 95 kilometres per hour. Location: within 85 kilometres of 15.7 degrees South 148.0 degrees East, estimated to be 275 kilometres east northeast of Cairns and 415 kilometres north northeast of Townsville. Movement: south at 11 kilometres per hour. A tropical low (12U) is developing in the Coral Sea, west-northwest of Willis Island. It has begun moving south-southwest and is expected to move towards the North Tropical Coast later today. It is forecast to cross the coast between Cardwell and Airlie Beach, most likely early on Sunday. Tropical Low 12U is forecast to reach tropical cyclone intensity prior to reaching the coast. However, heavy rainfall and damaging wind impacts are likely to be similar whether or not the system develops into a tropical cyclone. Hazards: GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 100 km/h may occur about the exposed coastal areas and elevated terrain between Port Douglas and Tully, including Cairns, this morning as the system tracks southwards and closer to the coast. GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 100 km/h are expected to develop over coastal areas between Tully and Airlie Beach, this afternoon or evening. Gales may extend to Proserpine and adjacent inland areas tonight. Gales are expected to persist until the system crosses the coast on Sunday morning. HEAVY RAINFALL, which may lead to FLASH FLOODING, is forecast to develop north of Townsville this morning, extending south to Airlie Beach as the day progresses. Locally INTENSE RAINFALL, which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING, is possible between Tully and Airlie Beach later on Saturday.
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST Severe Weather Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS For people in parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast Districts. Issued at 4:05 am Thursday, 8 January 2026. A tropical low approaches the North Tropical Coast, bringing heavy rainfall and damaging winds on Friday and Saturday. Weather Situation: A broad tropical low (12U) has formed in the Coral Sea and will begin slowly moving towards the northeast Queensland coast over the next few days. The low is expected to move inland over the weekend. To the south of the low, a surge in southeasterly winds is also expected to bring a risk of damaging winds to coastal areas. Shower and thunderstorm activity is expected to become more widespread with areas of heavy rainfall developing on Friday and continuing over the weekend. For the NORTH TROPICAL COAST: HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to develop during Friday and continue into Saturday. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 100 to 150 mm are likely, with isolated falls in excess of 200 mm possible. East to southeasterly DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with wind gusts around 90 km/h are also possible during Friday and Saturday, particularly about coastal areas in showers and thunderstorms. For the HERBERT AND LOWER BURDEKIN and parts of the CENTRAL COAST AND WHITSUNDAYS: HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to develop to the west of Townsville from late Friday night and extend through the remainder of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin district on Saturday. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 80 to 140 mm are likely, with isolated falls in excess of 180 mm possible. East to southeasterly DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h are also expected about exposed coastal parts during Friday and continue throughout Saturday, as the winds shift northeasterly during the afternoon and evening.
