On instinct.” Gwen scoffed. “Instinct. Sure.” “How would you explain it, then? Someone from your office tag my ear? Did you stick me with a tracker while you were writhing and screaming under my needle?” Gwen found her mouth too dry to respond, so she didn’t try. Besides, she didn’t have an answer. There was no logical reason she kept finding herself standing in a room alone with them. Well, them and a corpse, most of the time. She’d gotten the address from Lena the first time, and they’d scheduled a meeting for her tattoo, but since then… “That’s not important,” Gwen said, though she wasn’t sure if it was to herself or to Ink5oul. “I went through some paperwork now that I’m the manager–” “Oh, I bet you’re loving saying that,” Ink5oul interrupted.

Pressing herself to her hands and knees took more effort than she remembered. She felt… tired, like a flannel that had been wrung out and left in a heap to dry. “You weren't lying about the pain.” “I'd never lie about pain.” At Gwen's doubtful expression— or at least what she intended to be a doubtful expression— they added, “Well, no reason to lie when you're practically begging for it. The pain, that is.”

And why aren’t you with your friends?” Gwen didn't have a good answer for that. In all honesty, she didn't have any answer for that. When was the last time she'd gone out with friends? Before starting at the OIAR? The overnight hours made it hard to see people during the day even on her days off, her sleep schedule so warped by the years. Ink5oul clearly took her silence for the answer it was.

Maybe I can convince Alice to pull the fire alarm and then sneak some pens in the chaos?”
