an explanation of why saab moose-proofed their vehicles from 1948-2011: In 1948, Julian Shermis died in a collision of a Saab with a moose. It was from that time until the brand's closure in 2011 that Saab's management kept statistics on all road accidents involving animals. It is for safety reasons that the ignition on most Saab models was located not on a steering tube, but on a central tunnel next to a gearbox lever - too many drivers' knees were crushed due to the heavy ignition modules on steering tubes. It is because of the large number of accidents with moose (6,100 in more than 60 years) that high-strength windshield and reinforced A-pillars are used in Saab cars. This automobile concern didn't save on safety.
