The scene represented here is that of the penance of Saint John Chrysostom. This bishop of Antioch would have had a child with a princess. For his punishment, he would have been forced to walk naked on all fours, like an animal. In the foreground of this engraving, a naked woman sitting against a rock and surrounded by a deer, a pheasant and a goat, protects her child sleeping on her knees. Nature is highly developed. In the background, on the right you can see a naked man moving on all fours. this is Jean Chrysostom. At the bottom of the performance is a city. In the trees on the top left are two crests with coat of arms and at the bottom right you can see a tablet bearing the initials of Lucas Cranach, surrounding a winged snake drawing, and below, the date, 1509
