Legal filings detail a series of judgments against the Kazmis, who failed to comply with a court order and have been accused of obscuring their finances and dodging service processors as a growing list of former suppliers and franchisors sought payment. In February, a federal judge in New Jersey ordered the Kazmis to pay over $600,000 to a fuel supplier that accused the brothers of stealing gas. The supplier alleged in court filings that it cut the brothers off after they refused to sign a new contract. But the Kazmis exploited a security lapse and gained access to the supplier’s fuel depot. Over a ten-day period in August 2021, tanker trucks absconded with more than 230,000 gallons of fuel, according to the supplier’s court filings. A judge ruled in the supplier’s favor, finding the brothers unlawfully took the gas. The fuel supplier says it has yet to receive payment.

At the time the bird lived, 25 million years ago, global temperatures were higher, and the area where it was discovered was an ocean.[11][12] After excavation, the fossil of P. sandersi was catalogued and put in storage at the Charleston Museum, where it remained until it was rediscovered by paleontologist Daniel T. Ksepka in 2010.[13][14] The bird is named after Albert Sanders, the former curator of natural history at the Charleston Museum, who led the excavation of P. sandersi.[15] It currently sits at the Charleston Museum, where it was identified as a new species by Ksepka in 2014.[10]

There are also broader societal steps to take. We should consider whether to grant AI systems protections from harm, similar to the protections we give to children or pets. More expansive rights to own property or to vote seem too risky right now. But we should not rule out these possibilities for ever, as some recent US state bills attempt to do. These are hard questions that require far more deliberation and imagination about what a future shared with AI might look like.
