A new UC Santa Cruz project is improving air quality monitoring in Pajaro Valley, California! The region is home to many agricultural workers, whose work outside can leave them exposed to pollutants like wildfire smoke. To fill gaps in the area’s air quality monitoring network, a team led by Baskin Engineering Professor Javier González-Rocha has deployed new sensors—making crucial pollution data more accessible. The project is also exploring novel methods that combine sensor information with drone data to better model and predict pollution levels. Fueled by a partnership with climate justice organization Regeneración, this work is supporting community decision-making and helping more Californians access information that directly affects their lives.
