And it should concern anyone who cares about preventing family violence and femicide in Alberta. 🍎 Between 2011 and 2013, I was part of the policy-advocacy movement that pushed for the creation of this Committee. The goal was clear and evidence-based: to learn from deaths related to family violence so future deaths could be prevented. Family Violence Death Review Committees are widely recognized as best practice. When done well, they: ✅ Examine systemic failures, not individual blame ✅ Identify patterns across cases that no single agency can see ✅ Generate concrete, cross-system recommendations ✅ Ensure public accountability for action ✅ Keep the focus on prevention, not just response ✨ Over the years, the Committee produced many thoughtful recommendations. I later reviewed a decade of those recommendations and found a troubling pattern: many were never fully implemented. 📍 Why? Not because the recommendations lacked merit, but because there was no accountability mechanism to ensure follow-through. This gap was raised repeatedly. From the very beginning and during my first three years on the Committee, we argued for an implementation and tracking system so that the implementation of the recommendations could be monitored. The motivation likely being avoiding testimony by elected officials under oath in a court of law. Now that settlements are being achieved, and Premier Danielle Smith is publicly announcing them ( Okotoks, July 2, 2024 ), there are a number of questions still to be answered. 1. Is the Alberta government still supporting and encouraging coal mining in the Alberta Rockies and Eastern Slopes? Or will these initiatives now cease? 2. Will the Alberta government continue developing a new coal policy? Energy Minister Brian Jean stated the new coal policy would be developed exclusively with the coal companies ( Dec 20, 2024 ). 3. Is the Alberta government pursuing a similar settlement agreement with Northback about Grassy Mountain? 4. When will Alberta taxpayers know how much they paid to settle lawsuits arising from Alberta government policy initiatives and reversals? Neither the UCP government of Jason Kenney nor the UCP government of Danielle Smith ever sought or obtained a mandate from Albertans to encourage coal mining in the Rockies and Eastern Slopes.”
