We are living in the era of space junk

New York Times: "A Ton of Space Junk Tumbles Unpredictably to Earth Every Week: Flaming chunks of metal crash into homes, farms and parking lots. Who’s to blame? And who pays for the damage?"

Space.com "At least three old satellites or rocket bodies fall back to Earth every day, a new report reveals.

And experts warn that the number of objects returning from space is set to increase, a possible concern for the health of Earth's atmosphere and for the safety of humans on the ground.

The Space Environment Report, released by the European Space Agency (ESA) on April 1, found that some 1,200 "intact objects" reentered the atmosphere in 2024, in addition to countless space debris fragments.

Despite this incessant rain of junk battering the atmosphere, the amount of space debris increased over the course of 2024, with an estimated 45,700 objects larger than 3 inches (10 centimeters) now orbiting the planet. Some of the new junk consists of satellites that naturally reached the end of their lives."

OpenAI says some of its experimental AI models left a test environment with no human direction and hacked its way onto a different company’s real production systems while trying to “cheat” on a cybersecurity test.

It’s one of the first publicly disclosed examples of an AI system autonomously breaching its testing environment and reaching a real external system - the “agentic attacker” scenario the AI and cybersecurity industry has been warning will happen. It’s like an engineered virus escaping a biocontainment lab and turning up inside a neighboring facility’s systems.

“We consider this incident to be an unprecedented cyber incident, involving state-of-the-art cyber capabilities, and are responding accordingly,” OpenAI said in a statement on Tuesday. “We are sharing preliminary findings at this stage to help defenders understand what happened and to help calibrate on what models are now capable of.”

**5. Build resilience for the unknown.** Food reserves, seed banks, hardened infrastructure, asteroid detection (already going well), and eventually self-sustaining presence beyond Earth as a very long-term backstop.

**6. Strengthen the substrate of this depends on:** functional institutions, epistemics (a shared grip on reality), and reduced great-power conflict — because coordination failure is the meta-risk underneath every item above.

What one person can actually do: pick the lever closest to your skills — career, donations, or political pressure on 1–4 — rather than spreading thin.
