The term okogé is more or less f#g h#g – it means leftover rice in an emptied cooker. This is a film from a nation currently beset by butsukari – 'bumping' people's shoulders violently before vanishing in the crowd. Japan has pushed itself extremely hard, especially after their 1980's boom busted. Any Japanese story of homosexuals trying to get by in such an aggressively conservative culture is going to have some upsetting moments – and this is no exception. But this film is actually known for its japes and joy.

The cover of this hardback of The Doctor Who Cookbook features a Cyberman butler, a Dalek maid and a Yeti chef in front of The Doctor's police box Tardis. The autograph inside reads, "If you knew Suzy – Colin Baker." There's also a bookplate of a barely-clothed blonde valkyrie astride a winged horse; she's brandishing a golden scimitar and the horse flies before planetary spheres in a black void, above a bed of dusty cloud. The text on the bookplate reads, "Golden Wings by Boris Vallejo, 1977." and "From the books of:" without anyone's name being written. The limited amount of research I've done said these bookplates were put out by Doubleday's wonderful Science Fiction Book Club, a books-by-post service that ran from 1953 until last year. They sold me a hardback uniting three Target Dr Who novels when I was a member.
First rewatch of 'Warlord' in a long time and for the first time I'm thinking Zeeona killed herself intentionally. I don't know why it hit me like that this time but suddenly it all seems to point that way. Seconds after Zeeona feels her father die with big eyes and a scream, we see her put on the most joyous face for Tarrant as she cracks on, instead of sharing any grief with him. And Avon seems sure Zeeona went to her death; sure enough that the look on his face was a gut punch to Tarrant. And although being perfectly still helped the simple special effect of her death, we do see her face first, as she lies there motionless. It could be read as a terminal paralysis but this time it just felt like she had lain down to endure a suicide she committed. Was Avon able to perceive guilt in a way Tarrant couldn't? Zeeona certainly seems more competent if we agree the guilt was there, but I suppose this could also be a powerful lesson in how passion and emotion can lethally cloud perception.
