In 2023, following an extensive public process, the School Committee made a unanimous recommendation to remove a full-police armed police officer from the High School (Student Resource Offi-cer" or SRO), and to pursue instead a "Student Liaison Officer" (SLO) model. As Council President at the time, I was proud to join this unanimous School Committee vote. Under an SLO model, specially trained officers are called when support is needed for criminal and delinquent conduct or property crime, but are not physically located within the schools when they're not needed. I'm very grateful to the School Committee and staff who worked so hard to make these policy changes. Since then, the previous Administration ended the SRO program, but never pursued the SLO model. Many residents recently learned that the schools were considering returning to the original SRO model, without a community process. I share these concerns. I was therefore heartened to hear last night during the SPS Budget presentation that the district is indeed continuing to seriously consider the SLO model that was unanimously recommended by the School Committee in 2023. I respectfully encourage SPS to continue pursuing the SLO model and fully enacts the School Committee's recommendations, and I thank everyone who has reached out to advocate for this. Pre-submission Draft - May 2026 Councilor Ewen-Campen CITY OF SOMERVILLE ORDINANCE NO. 2026- IN CITY COUNCIL: →, 2026 WHEREAS: The City of Somerville is a welcoming community that does not support discrimination or violence anywhere in the world; WHEREAS: The City of Somerville has previously adopted a policy of ethical procurement, including refusing to do business with companies that supported the former apartheid regime in South Africa and those that use prison labor; WHEREAS: On November 4, 2025, 55% of voters in the Somerville general municipal election voted 'yes' on Ballot Question 3 to instruct the Mayor of Somerville and all Somerville elected leaders to "end all current city business and prohibit future city investments and contracts with companies as long as such companies engage in business that sustains Israel's apartheid, genocide, and illegal occupation of Palestine"; WHEREAS: On November 25, 2025, this City Council approved A Resolution in Support of Democratic Divestment Action Regarding Question 3, resolving to "work toward passing an ordinance within a year that implements the will of the majority of Somerville voters to boycott and divest in accordance with the language of Ballot Question 3, and in a manner that is practicable and legally feasible."; and, WHEREAS: Continued investment in companies that directly profit from oppression and violence is counter to the established policies of the City of Somerville; NOW THEREFORE, Be it ordained by the City Council, in session assembled, that Chapter 2, Article VIII, Division 1 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Somerville is amended as follows by inserting the following section. Who's running: The seat is open following current rep. Erika Uyterhoeven's announcement that she'll run for state Senate this year. Somerville City Councilor Ben Ewen-Campen and Olivia Gilligan Corsetti, who worked as campaign manager for former Somerville mayor Katjana Ballantyne, have both announced that they'll run for the seat. Ewen-Campen was elected to represent Ward 3 in 2017.

Dear Ben and Lance, We wanted to thank you for arranging DPW drop-offs not on Saturdays. It's a huge benefit to us. We had a bunch of stuff that we hadn't been able to get rid of for years because of our Sabbath observance. You made it all possible. We had a good clean out yesterday and our apartment is now safer and has more space again. Thanks for being so responsive and making Somerville more inclusive.
