Tragically, the bodies of four girls were found in a basement restroom. A fifth girl survived but lost an eye. Like most acts of racist violence, the bombing spurred activists rather than discouraging them. The Day That Church Becamea Tomb Many of the civil rights marches in Birmingham began at the steps the 16 th Street Baptist Church. It also was a neighborhood church for hundreds of people who attended services or gathered in the assembly room in the basement for Sunday school. When the dynamite exploded, it blew a hole in the church's rear wall and shattered all but one stained-glass window. The bodies of four innocent young girls were found in the rubble. Their deaths shocked the nation, and more than 8,000 mourners attended their funeral.
