The battery never held a charge for more than a few minutes and I found a 2013 under the donor 9V's label so being in storage for over a decade didn't do the Ni-MH cells any favours. Bought a replacement using low self-discharge Ni-MH, interesting to see such a different cell arrangement inside.

Not my neatest battery rebuild as my heatshrink is too large and the welds are a bit rough due to welding over fragments of the old strips but without a recharge it happily printed this battery status and calculator screenshot which is more than I could manage from the old fully-charged battery.
