Here are some modern twists on classic old fashioned cocktails: • Bourbon Smash - Muddle fresh mint leaves with sugar and bourbon, then shake over ice and strain into a glass. Top with club soda for some fizz. This is a fresher take on a mint julep. • Fig and Honey Old Fashioned - Muddle fresh figs with honey and bourbon, then shake over ice and strain into a glass over ice. Garnish with an orange twist. The honey and figs add sweetness and fruitiness. • Coffee Old Fashioned - Add 1/2 ounce of coffee liqueur like Kahlua and 1/2 ounce of simple syrup to bourbon over ice. Stir and garnish with an orange twist. The coffee liqueur provides a nice layer of mocha flavor. • Maple Bacon Old Fashioned - Make an old fashioned with bourbon, maple syrup, and bitters. Garnish with a strip of candied bacon for a touch of smoke and saltiness. • Rum Old Fashioned - Replace the traditional bourbon with an aged rum like Zacapa 23 or Appleton Estate 12-year.
