The main lesson from stories like this is that most people are passive listeners. That's not a bad thing on the face of it -- for plenty of folks seeing out music and doing deep dives into back catalogs is too time intensive and probably mind-numbingly dull. The part a lot of people are leaving out is that music was commoditized well before the current generation of AI apps and even before Spotify dominated the market. Starbucks' rise has created a world where even the best and most engaging music is background noise, chosen by algorithms with little regard to creative context or backstory. Heck, focused group human curation out of existence decades ago. Spotify certainly played a major role in devaluing the art form as a whole. AI takes the form of its container. Algorithmically generated music and art will win the day if we continue to devalue artists and stop being curious about the things we put in our ears.
