Yeah I tried that here, but it loses the feeling of a book opened on a table. Before and after here. Not saying you're wrong about that (my intuition says the navbar is too bright). I just can't get the feel I want doing it "right" yet. Need to try things

Oh interesting, I kind of think the content having the white background looks more like a book on a table. In my mind, the page I’m reading is the brightest and the page I’ve already read wouldn’t have as much direct light, so it would have a slightly darker background color.
Also may have just sat with the first design for too long. I like the new version better the more I look at it
