ENLIGHTENMENT By BHS It was extraordinary. It was something totally unknown to their kind, a melding of language and tone and precise vibrations, of structured form and wild, uninhibited expression blended together. Yet there was no fear when faced with this unknown, only boundless joy. The sound expanded through their mind, twisting, entwining, rising and falling in a manner they had never even dreamed of. They didn't completely understand the language yet, but on some fundamental level, they knew that understanding wasn't necessary. That was the elegant beauty of it; the sound was so right, so perfect that what the words meant didn't matter. They closed their eyes and listened, drinking it in, savoring every moment. Again, they were astounded. The sound awakened things in their soul that they never knew were there. It affected mind and body, it made their silver skin shiver with awe and delight. And now the sound curled back on itself, changing from being strange and daring to something soothing and familiar, like the sight of home after a long journey. They felt warm, safe… as if in the comfort of old friends, drifting down on the wind as the sound softened once again and faded out. As the final strains echoed through them, they knew, they knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, what they had just experienced. It was so simple, something a child could conceive of, and yet so complex as to boggle the imagination. This sound, this revelation, it was… Enlightenment.
