In addition to any other special superior court judges authorized by law, effective July
7 1, 2026, the Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court shall appoint three special
8 superior court judges to serve terms expiring at the earlier of (i) eight years from the date that
9 each judge takes office or (ii) the date of the judge's death, retirement, resignation, or removal
10 from office. Special superior court judges appointed pursuant to this subsection shall be
11 designated as special superior court judges to hear and decide complex family financial cases as
12 defined in G.S. 50-110(2) and shall be known as Complex Family Financial Court Judges.

Woodhouse, the former head of the North Carolina GOP who now works for the conservative John Locke Foundation, has suggested a way that Republicans could get around the constitutional requirement. He wrote that impeached justices would be suspended under state law until the Senate votes, and senators could "slow-walk any trial possibly past the 2022 elections, when Republicans have a strong chance at retaking a state Supreme Court majority."
