Love having that attitude towards old games! Nintendo games like LoZ: Phantom Hourglass incorporate that into gameplay, it's really special! Wish more games coerced you into cartography through in-game features

it's funny -- Maddie's playing Silksong and that game makes you *buy* the ability to annotate the map. I've been trying to interrogate why that kind of design shits me off when I'd otherwise be fine with the absence of the feature altogether. Does the intentionality of the friction actually matter?

Really need to come up with a catchy term for this late stage of metroidvania where the exploration has happened JUST widely enough that the trickle of new abilities and places slows to a crawl, but it's not yet the endgame collectathon. I think they almost all suffer for it and should be shorter!
