The doted-on little girl grew up to be a jealous lover, a pitifully dependent wife and then an indomitable woman, and in time one of France's most loved and finest writers. Colette (1873-1954) possessed pansexual appetites, failing to discriminate between male and female, old and young. just so long as the flesh moved her. She suffered from sloth and barely restrained gluttony-blowing up to blimp proportions periodically. Although there are, in COLETTE: A Passion for Life, ample illustrations of her family, her three husbands, her cats and dogs, her myriad famous writer and artist friends, it is startling how often she appears alone. Exhibitionist, poseur and ultimately outsider, she dominates the 450-odd photographs with hardly a rival-even when her back is turned.
