Whenever you see kaiju or other giants in the media, someone will be quick to point out that they couldn’t possibly be that big in real life due to the Square-Cube Law. But what is the Square-Cube Law, and why does it mean people can’t be big? The Square-Cube Law was first described by Galileo Galilei. Although better known for his discovery that the tides are caused by all the water on earth sloshing around as it rotates on its axis (Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, 1632), Galileo also found the time to describe the relationship between the surface area of an object and the volume of an object as that object increases in size.
