I realize that “Pioneers” probably does not mean the same thing to me, a seventh-generation Oregonian who has long taken pride in ancestors who arrived on the Oregon Trail, as it does to descendants of the Indigenous people who were displaced and killed with the arrival of white settlers. History has a knack for examining the people who came here and forced others off their land with a non-critical eye. But it is also those same people to whom we owe Oregon’s statehood and the society we now inhabit. So it is complicated.

Text from the Athletic article regarding impending NBA expansion reads; "Industry sources have opined in recent months that an expansion fee could run as high as $8 billion per team. Team governors do not have to split expansion fee revenues with the players."
Excerpt from the article: "These things usually are driven by an owner's ego, and owners typically are so busy, they want to take shortcuts," Marshall Glickman, a former Blazer official who oversaw the project recently told The Oregonian. "So they march into the mayor's office and say, `Here's my list, are you going to give me what I want? And if you don't, I might be in Nashville next week.' But thankfully, Paul wasn't like that."

Backers of luring Major League Baseball to Portland found buy-in for a “jock tax” in the 2025 legislative session. Kotek last month signed Senate Bill 110 to authorize up to $800 million to help finance a Major League stadium by diverting income taxes from a team’s players and some employees to pay off bonds over three decades. It’s appealing to policymakers in part because those taxes wouldn’t exist without the new stadium. But the state’s already collecting and spending taxes on the NBA salaries earned here, so a jock tax might not be so easy a sell. Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers have an established and enthusiastic fan base that supports restaurants, bars and other businesses in the orbit of Moda during gametime and when live acts come to town. The alliance lining up behind a new basketball arena is not ruling out a more substantial ask for public dollars. Glickman pointed to a range of public and private financing options that could pay for a new basketball venue. “A lot of people want to focus on the so-called jock tax,” he said, “but that may or may not be the right idea for this.”
