CRT simulator GPU shader coming December 24, 2024 on github & shadertoy! Genesis of CRT-simulation replacements in future, when used CRT tubes are near-extinct. Tomorrow's 240Hz, 480Hz & 1000Hz OLEDs can optionally faithfully simulate CRT electron beam for 60fps content.

It has been a long time since I've used a CRT but I always had a very strong impression that shooters looked like they had better image quality by virtue to having a much smoother motion than LCDs. I hope to see a side by side comparison of this with an actual CRT at a convention or tradeshow.

I know only very little of the matter, but does that mean that interlaced frame rates would be emulated in a more accurate manner?

Definitely would love to use this in reshade for some non emulator retro games on pc

looking forward to some demo videos of your implementation :D

So, are 120 Hz people out of luck? Does the shader need at least 4x the framerate?

@hamptoncaught.bsky.social · Dec 24

The shadertoy page mentions that you can run the simulator at non integer refresh rates (eg 165hz) and it will still work as intended. But would there not still be some form of stutter running 60fps content within a 144hz or 165hz refresh rate?

Open source code is now released forthe world's most accurate looking CRT simulation. It lets you simulate the electron beam of a 60Hz CRT tube on your 240Hz+ display, in real time, and looks better than BFI. blurbusters.com/crt-simulati...

Are IPS monitors out of question?

J'ai pas compris mais ça intéressera @dreast.bsky.social I guess

Is a refresh rate multiple of 4 the minimum needed to make it convincing? I presume this will also create the unpleasant flicker of a crt, so I'd also be interested in simulations of 85hz+ pc monitors which helped a lot on that front.

Nice! It's the missing piece to my Final Fantasy X mod. I even have the Japanese D93 CRT colorspace working. I'll probably add it to RenoDX main library as well.

Does this algorithm work on non-integer refresh rate multiples? Might be useful on 144/165Hz monitors if it can.

I have a 240hz display can i do anything like this?

Bleats⛧Sinodai ›»⧽⧼«‹ CONDUIT · Dec 24

If it accurately simulates the electron beam, I do wonder if this could significantly increase LED display life spans...

I take it the focus on high refresh rates means that this shader can't be used on 60 Hz displays?
