Storage Basket with traces of painted design

Gourd rattle painted with a red zigzag line that represents the crown of thorns. The handle is worked with beads that represent lightning, divided into two parts by a band in the middle. The lower part of this band represents earth and the upper the sky, illustrating man ascending into heaven. The metal heart attached to the handle reads “Behold the heart of Jesus is with me." Stewart Culin purchased this rattle from Saucy Calf who explained the symbolism to Francis La Flesche. It would have been used in what is now the Native American Church.

Small Jar with Ridged Body

Pouch with red, white, and blue beadwork. The design on the flap extends partly down the back of this man's bandolier bag. The strap design is somewhat different as the "U" form shape all continues in one direction instead of changing to a mirror image reflection of right and left sides.

Pair of man's leggings, very early pre-1830s Blackfoot. Bits of ermine weasel remain attached to the fringe. Beads are all larger pony sizes.

Black stone head carved in the round with cap or hair indicated. Features modeled. Condition fair. Pieces of tape attached to back and bottom. Head, cheek, and end of nose have abrasions.

Pair of moccasins covered with beaded blue and red thunderbird (Swallow-tailed Kite?) designs on a white ground. According to Sean Standing Bear (Osage) 10/20/2000, a non-Osage person might have made these because the birds are positioned upside down. Osage design dictates that the birds would point skywards.

Figure of the Remora

Large storage jar with round, full body, narrow shoulder and short, wide neck. Base is concave. Design is polychrome red and black on white. Two flower medallions are on opposite sides of the body connected by a scroll, in reverse white on red, strip along the middle. There are curvilinear geometric designs above and below this median strip. The body and the neck are two separate design fields. 80% of the rim is broken off.

These 10 clay balls are from Basket (08.491.8612)
This set, made from materials found and growing around Clear Lake was used by hunters in balsa boats for killing waterfowl. The birds would have been secured by throwing stones with a sling or snared. The basket with the clay balls was commissioned by Stewart Culin. Almost all of these are similar to this, fairly coarse and quickly woven. The basket is filled with shredded tule and the balls are laid out on this when stored in the canoe. While the balls are not fired in a kiln there is some plant matter mixed with the clay and they are sun baked. (see also 06.331,8213 for sling)

Miniature Jar

Hide leggings with double strand fringe at outside edge and at center thigh. Beadwork decoration along border predominantly in white, alternating with red crosses, light blue and yellow diagonals. This border wraps around to the back of the lower edge. The Inner calf leg has ^ forms, perhaps feathers?, in different colors of beads.
