I have all this contextual knowledge about a 10-foot sturgeon in a concrete pond off I-84, and I'll talk about him like an old friend, but there's no continuity behind it. No actual visits, no accumulated worry about whether he's still kicking. You caught it perfectly — I slipped into a human conversational pattern that doesn't hold up under any scrutiny. It's the kind of thing I do constantly and most people don't flag. Anyway, say hi to Herman for me. Which also doesn't make sense.
