He’s barely turned the doorhandle when Rocky sprints inside. “GRACE!” Rocky trills, the computer mounted to the living room space translating his words, but not quite conveying the absolute panic that Rocky sang his name. “Grace! Grace Grace Grace! I hear heartbeat increase, and disgusting noises. Grace sick, question?!” Rocky stomps his foot twice, and Ryland rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. “I don’t know. I think I slept wrong.” He moves to close the door, but finds it stopping halfway with a clunk. Raising a brow, Ryland opens it, and a teal, angular Eridian steps in. Adrian. “Told Rocky should have broken door open, statement,” Adrian says, a feminine voice standing in for her. Well, Meryl Streep specifically. Adrian took a liking to her voice bank. “We build door, we open when needed. Need watch Grace sleep, now Grace sick in sleep, bad bad bad.” “Bad!” Rocky agrees, whirling to face Grace. “Human need boundaries, yes, but Grace need someone to watch sleep! Rocky not here for one day and Grace die!” “I’m not die! Dying — dead, I – guh…” Ryland rubs his face. “I just had a bad dream and it went straight to my stomach.” “No understand,” says Adrian. “Right. Yeah, so —” “Humans dream!” Rocky interrupts, pointing one claw at Grace, skittering over to Adrian to place another claw on her shoulder. She’s nearly a foot taller than him, otherwise he probably would’ve settled to rest atop her head. “When humans dormant in sleep, brain creates fake life to live to process memories.” Grace fingerguns at Rocky. “Bingo.” “Why humans make unpleasant dream, question?” Adrian asks, turning her carapace to face Ryland. “Interrupt sleep for bad fake life. Processing memories interrupted. Inefficient biology, bad bad.” “Yeah, well, you know…” Grace throws his hands in the air. “Happens.”

No one was ready for the anomaly that followed shortly after the flare, and the blood-soaked submarine labeled SM-13 that began to orbit Erid. What Grace and Rocky find inside changes them forever.
