To whom it may concern, I am writing to express my extreme displeasure at the expansion of universes beyond sets announced this weekend. Magic has truly lost its identity, focusing on external properties and shallow takes on popular genres instead of fleshed-out worlds with resonant mechanics and epic stories. As a long-time lover of magic it’s obvious that these sets, in the words of Aaron Forscythe, are not for me. I have purchased universes beyond products very sparingly and will not be purchasing any in the future. Please find attached a newspaper printing of Fractured Identity. I feel that this card perfectly sums up magic in the past five years: an identity fractured between leeching on external properties, in a set full of random characters wearing cowboy hats for no clear reason, from an aftermath product that was an obvious failure, in a border emulating a dead medium that could not possibly excite anyone. It’s my hope that magic products can be for magic players once again. Sincerely, BoofTroupe P.S. Please make the few sets targeted at enfranchised players, like Mystery Booster 2, available and abundant at local game stores. Magic is about the gathering, and without supporting our gathering places there will be no magic.
