What the gaming industry needs now is a new Tetris, not the next The Last of Us. Games have always been a mix between a toy and a story. I believe the current troubled times in the game dev world are largely caused by a shift in balance in the last two decades. We need to put play back in games.

perhaps the issue is more product vs art. super high budget inevitably leans toward the product side, similar to blockbuster hollywood films. i've found myself dismayed over the huge success of the silent hill 2 remake. it is a highly polished product. but is it better in every way?

i think balatro is very, VERY close to what you're talking about, if not flat out just that. the solution to gaming's problems ultimately cannot lie in the hands of corporations, because they won't ever sieze that solution. indie games are the future people

You can see that issue in the cringey desire to be loved and accepted by Hollywood, which was on display at TGA a few times.
